Areté was launched in Spain in early 1999 with Isabel Allende’s Hija de la fortuna (Daughter of Fortune) and Gonzalo Suárez’s Ciudadano Sade (Citizen Sade), two titles that demonstrated the publisher’s belief in bringing quality fiction to the general public. Areté’s books are edited and distributed in all of the Random House Mondadori territories.
In ancient Greece, the word "areté" meant "to pursue excellence" or to have the "ability to excel." Inspired by the concept, the imprint publishes authors with extraordinary literary talent, such as Juan Marsé, José Luis Sanpedro, V.S. Naipaul and Isabel Allende. The Random House Mondadori imprints, Plaza & Janés, Lumen, Debate, Grijalbo and Mondadori, all contribute to Areté, pooling their editorial expertise and contents. As a result, Areté brings together top authors and their works, and achieves the highest quality in publishing, diffusion and marketing.
